RAND Corporation publishes a study analyzing the breakdown of US and Chinese AI industry companies

According to CGTN Tech, RAND Corporation's Center on AI, Security, and Technology published a headcount of 1,181 AI firms worldwide in August, with 743 American and 438 Chinese firms. The study found 61% of US firms are pure software shops, while 26% of Chinese firms are; the rest build hardware like robots, cars, or drones. It also notes similar shares of transformer-based models, and that Chinese firms cluster in manufacturing and the physical economy, including humanoid robots at 12% versus 2% in the US. The analysis attributes differences to market scale, industrial policy, and venture funding, among other factors.
