According to cnBeta, the U.S. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has opened a preliminary probe into Openpilot and its maker Comma.ai on September 21, following five crashes that involved Openpilot or its derivative software, with 3 dead and up to 11 injured. The investigation focuses on the system's failure to detect or respond to slow or stationary vehicles in the same lane; Openpilot is a retrofit driver-assistance system that supports roughly 350 models and is available for about $999 with hardware, and its software is open source on GitHub.
